#ReadyforRome: A Taste of the Eternal City

When you come to Rome for the MaterCare International Rome Conference, you will nourish more than your mind and spirit, you will also have the opportunity to experience one of the world's most beloved food cultures!

From a morning espresso enjoyed standing at a neighbourhood café to a leisurely evening meal shared with new friends, food is an important part of the Roman experience. As we prepare to gather in the Eternal City from September 7–10, 2026, we invite you to start imagining the flavours, traditions, and fellowship that await.

Start your day like a Roman! In Rome, coffee is more than a beverage, it is part of daily life. A quick caffè usually means a small, strong espresso, often enjoyed standing at the counter before beginning the day. Feeling adventurous? Try a cappuccino in the morning, paired with a light pastry. One thing to remember as you prepare for your Italian experience: cappuccino is traditionally considered a morning drink!

Our #ReadyforRome challenge: What is your favourite way to start the day, coffee, tea, or something else? Tell us in the comments!

When in Rome... Eat Pasta! Roman cuisine is famous for its simple ingredients and unforgettable flavours. While visiting the city, you may want to try some of Rome's classic pasta dishes:

  • Cacio e Pepe: A beautifully simple combination of pasta, Pecorino Romano cheese, and black pepper.

  • Carbonara: A rich Roman classic traditionally made with egg, Pecorino Romano, guanciale, and black pepper.

  • Amatriciana: A flavourful pasta dish featuring tomato, Pecorino Romano, and guanciale.

  • Gricia: Often described as a delicious predecessor to carbonara, made with Pecorino Romano and guanciale.

And, of course, there is always pizza!

No trip to Rome would be complete without gelato. Whether you prefer pistachio, lemon, chocolate, hazelnut, or a classic creamy flavour, stopping for gelato is one of life's simple joys, and a wonderful excuse to take a break while exploring the Eternal City.

You may also encounter tempting Italian pastries, tiramisu, and other sweet treats that are perfect for sharing around the table.

Important question: If you could choose only one gelato flavour for the entire week in Rome, what would it be?

One of the most beautiful things about sharing a meal is the opportunity to connect.

The MaterCare International Rome Conference will bring together healthcare professionals, ethicists, faith leaders, advocates, and others from around the world, united by a commitment to the dignity of motherhood and life-affirming maternal healthcare.

Some of the most meaningful conference moments may happen between sessions- over a coffee, during lunch, or around a dinner table as stories are shared and friendships begin.

After all, food has a remarkable way of bringing people together. We will share an evening meal during the conference. Contact us if you haven't already received your invitation at info@matercare.org

As we celebrate 30 years of MaterCare International and gather for The Genius of Motherhood, we look forward not only to learning and reflecting together, but also to enjoying the warmth, hospitality, and unforgettable flavours of Rome.
