Project Background
St. Rita Maternity Unit – Ruhango District, Rwanda
The St. Rita Maternity Unit project was established to strengthen access to safe, high-quality maternal healthcare in Ruhango Village, located in Ruhango District of Southern Rwanda. In response to ongoing needs for improved maternal and newborn services in the region, MaterCare International provided essential medical equipment and operational support to enhance the unit’s capacity to deliver skilled, compassionate care.

Working in partnership with the Pallottine Sisters, the project focuses on improving maternal health outcomes, reducing preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth, and ensuring mothers and newborns receive timely, life-saving services. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to advancing safe motherhood and strengthening community-based healthcare in rural Rwanda.
Project Background
Masaka Maternity Unit – Gasabo District, Kigali, Rwanda
The Masaka Maternity Unit project was undertaken to expand and improve maternal healthcare services in Masaka Village, located in Gasabo District within the City of Kigali. Recognizing the growing demand for quality maternity care in this rapidly developing area, MaterCare International supported the renovation of the facility and provided essential medical equipment to enhance clinical services.

In collaboration with the Pallottine Sisters, the project aims to create a safe, well-equipped environment for mothers and newborns while strengthening the overall standard of maternal healthcare delivery. The maternity unit was formally blessed on December 3, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to promote safe motherhood and dignified care for women and families in Rwanda.
“The facilities in Rwanda showed us what can be done with good intentions, good planning and good funding. After 20+ years on the Board of MaterCare, the 4 newborns in the clean and modern facilities built by the Polish Foundation and equipped by MaterCare made me cry and cry. THIS is what we work for. THIS is what we give for. “ -Theresa Winchester, MaterCare Board Chair
