Project Background

In response to the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare in Uganda’s Sheema/Mbarara District, the St. Claret Maternity Health Centre was established in Nyabwina village. The region lacked adequate outpatient facilities, leading to limited access to essential maternal and neonatal care. Many parishes in the area had no designated outpatient buildings, and temporary clinics were often set up in churches with permission from the Archdiocese. Additionally, rented private residences served as makeshift healthcare facilities.

Historically, maternal healthcare in the region faced severe challenges, including high maternal and infant mortality rates due to inadequate medical infrastructure and limited access to trained healthcare professionals. Many women had to travel long distances to receive medical attention, often in unsafe conditions. The reliance on makeshift clinics and under-equipped facilities underscored the necessity of establishing a dedicated maternity center to serve the local population effectively.

Project Objectives

The primary goal of this project was to provide a well-equipped maternity health center to support safe childbirth and maternal healthcare services for the region. By constructing a dedicated maternity unit, the project aimed to:

  • Reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

  • Provide quality antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.

  • Improve healthcare accessibility for mothers and babies in rural communities.

  • Support the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes in developing sustainable maternal healthcare initiatives.

Project Implementation

The maternity health center was constructed with funding from The Watoto - Dzieci Afryki Foundation, ensuring that a permanent, dedicated facility was available for maternal care. MaterCare International provided medical equipment to enhance service delivery. The facility is expected to serve as a vital healthcare hub for the surrounding communities.

On March 6th, the facility was officially opened and blessed by His Grace Lambert Bainnomugisha, Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese. The event was met with immense joy and gratitude from the local community. The new maternity center has been warmly welcomed by residents, as it promises to significantly improve healthcare outcomes for mothers and newborns in the region.

Future Plans & Expansion

Moving forward, MaterCare International will continue to collaborate with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes to expand and enhance the center’s services. Future initiatives may include:

  • Training programs for midwives and healthcare providers.

  • Outreach programs to improve prenatal education.

  • Strengthening partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability.

The St. Claret Maternity Health Centre represents a significant milestone in improving maternal healthcare in Uganda’s rural communities. Through the joint efforts of dedicated organizations and individuals, mothers and babies in Nyabwina and surrounding areas now have access to essential, life-saving medical care. The success of this project underscores the importance of global partnerships in advancing healthcare accessibility and quality.
