#ReadyforRome: Happy Feet Make Happy Pilgrims!

As I start getting ready for the MaterCare 2026 Rome Conference, I've been making lists, checking travel documents, and dreaming about all the incredible places we'll visit together. But there's one item that's climbed right to the top of my packing list and it isn't my passport. It's my shoes.
Not my nicest shoes. Not my newest shoes. Definitely not my "I'll just wear these because they look good" shoes.
I'm talking about my most comfortable walking shoes.
If you've never been to Rome, let me give you a little heads-up. Rome wasn't designed with stilettos in mind! The streets are paved with beautiful cobblestones that have been welcoming pilgrims for centuries. They're charming, historic... and wonderfully unforgiving if you're wearing the wrong footwear.
One of the highlights of our conference will undoubtedly be visiting the magnificent Saint Peter's Basilica. Even before you step inside, you'll find yourself walking across the vast expanse of Saint Peter's Square. Once inside, you'll want to wander slowly, taking in Michelangelo's Pietà, Bernini's breathtaking Baldachin, the soaring nave, and countless chapels that invite quiet reflection.
And if you're feeling adventurous enough to climb to the top of the dome? Well, here's a little challenge! If you take the elevator part way, you'll still need to climb 320 steps. If you decide to walk from the bottom, it's 551 steps to the top. Trust me, the panoramic view over Rome is worth every one of them, but your feet will appreciate every bit of preparation you gave them beforehand!
Most visitors to Rome easily walk between 10,000 and 20,000 steps every day, often without even realizing it. Between conference sessions, pilgrimages, shared meals, and those irresistible "Let's just see what's around this next corner" moments, the steps add up quickly.
So here's my prescription; yes, a genuine MaterCare prescription for me, your humble Communications Director, Jennifer!
Take your walking shoes out now.

Wear them on your daily walks. Break them in. Get to know them well.
This is not the time to discover that your shoes and your feet have irreconcilable differences.
You might even consider bringing two comfortable pairs so they can take turns carrying you through the Eternal City. Your feet will thank you, and you'll enjoy every moment so much more.
Rome has a wonderful way of slowing us down. Every street tells a story. Every church invites a prayer. Every piazza becomes a place to pause, laugh with new friends, and enjoy a well-earned gelato.
The MaterCare 2026 Rome Conference isn't simply about attending excellent healthcare sessions. It's about pilgrimage, friendship, faith, and experiencing the beauty of our shared mission in one of the most inspiring cities in the world.
So as you get Ready for Rome, remember this simple piece of advice:
Pack your enthusiasm. Pack your camera. Pack your sense of adventure.
But above all...
Pack the shoes that will carry you through every unforgettable step.
I can't wait to walk beside you in Rome!
