Each year on Earth Day, people across the globe pause to reflect on how we care for our common home. For those of us at MaterCare International, this day also invites us to reflect on how care for the Earth is deeply connected to care for mothers =, especially those living in the world’s most vulnerable communities.
This Earth Day, we invite you to join us in a simple but powerful gesture: one hour of lights out for mothers around the world at 8pm Atlantic Time.
Turning off the lights for just one hour is a symbolic act of solidarity. It reminds us that while many of us have reliable electricity, clean water, and safe healthcare nearby, countless mothers do not. In rural and underserved regions where MaterCare serves, power outages are common, roads are difficult to travel, and access to safe maternal healthcare can mean the difference between life and death.
For a mother in a remote village, childbirth often happens in clinics with limited electricity or none at all. Midwives and doctors may rely on flashlights, lanterns, or daylight to safely deliver babies. Refrigeration for medicines can be unreliable. Communication tools that depend on electricity may fail at critical moments. These realities remind us that sustainable infrastructure, responsible stewardship of resources, and environmental care are not abstract ideals they are essential to protecting life.
By observing one hour of lights out, we unite in prayer, reflection, and action. We remember the mothers who walk long distances for prenatal care. We honor the healthcare workers who serve tirelessly with limited resources. We give thanks for the gift of life and renew our commitment to safeguarding both mothers and the Earth that sustains us.
This Earth Day, consider using your hour of darkness in meaningful ways:
Offer a prayer for mothers and babies around the world.
Reflect on how environmental challenges such as drought, extreme heat, and flooding affect maternal health and access to care.
Talk with your family about ways to conserve energy and protect the planet.
Share this message with your community and invite others to join the hour of lights out.
At MaterCare International, our mission is rooted in compassion, dignity, and service. We believe that caring for mothers is one of the most powerful ways to build healthier families, stronger communities, and a more hopeful future. On Earth Day, as we turn off the lights together, we shine a light on what matters most: the safety, health, and dignity of every mother, everywhere.
Join us this Earth Day. Turn off your lights for one hour. Stand in solidarity with mothers around the world. Let your small action become a beacon of hope.
