MaterCare International is pleased to announce the Most Rev. Kevin Doran presenting in our 2019 Rome Conference programme.
Bishop Doran currently serves as Chairperson of the Council for Life and of the Consultative Group on Bioethics of the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He is also a member of the Council for Justice and Peace, the Council for Theology and the Council for Doctrine. He represents the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference at the Anscombe Bioethics Centre (Oxford) and is the liaison between the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference and Irish pro-life groups. He also guest lectures in Catholic Social Teaching at St Angela's College, Sligo.
His Rome Conference presentation is entitled "Witnessing to the Gospel of Life in Ireland".
Thirty five years after the insertion of an amendment into the Constitution of Ireland which acknowledged the right to life of the unborn and the equal right to life of the mother, the Irish people, by a significant majority, removed that amendment in another referendum in May 2018. Just seven months later, the Irish parliament approved the most "liberal" abortion regime in Europe. In this short intervention, I will explore why this happened, what we have learnt from the experience, what is happening now "on the ground", and what we need to do now.
