At its 2026 conference, MaterCare International introduced four awards to recognize exceptional contributions to maternal healthcare, outstanding presentations, and the commitment of those who dedicate their lives to protecting the lives and dignity of mothers and their unborn children.

Named in honour of beloved saints who exemplify faith, compassion, and service, the awards celebrate the values at the heart of MaterCare International’s mission:

  • Saint Luke Award

  • Saint John Paul II Award

  • Saint Gianna Beretta Molla Award

  • Saints Cosmas and Damian Award

Each award recognizes excellence while drawing attention to the enduring connection between faith, medicine, and the sacred dignity of human life.

Who are Saints Cosmas and Damian? Physicians Who Served Without Reward

Saints Cosmas and Damian were early Christian physicians who lived during the third and early fourth centuries. Remembered for their medical skill, deep faith, and extraordinary generosity, the brothers treated the sick without accepting payment. They became known as the Anargyroi, meaning “the silverless,” and are honoured as the patron saints of physicians and surgeons. According to Christian tradition, they were martyred for their faith in Christ.

Their example offers a powerful reminder that healthcare is more than a profession: it is a vocation rooted in compassion, selflessness, and respect for the dignity of every human person.

Through these new awards, MaterCare International celebrates those who embody these virtues in their work and witness, advancing a culture of life and ensuring that mothers and their unborn children receive the care, respect, and protection they deserve.

Congratulations to all the award recipients, and thank you for your contributions!
