MaterCare serves the needs of mothers worldwide, and we do all this from an office in St. John's, Newfoundland. Our office needs a new color printer and ongoing supplies, but we at MaterCare spend well below the industry average on administration, putting over 95 percent of all donations directly back into projects!
MaterCare has been endorsed by many highly reguarded international figures, including:
Dr. John Lee
His Holiness Pope Francis
00120 Vatican City
We want to thank you for the enthusiasm, courage and support for mothers and the marginalized that you have brought to the papacy over the past year. As a group of Catholic obstetricians, midwives and health care professionals, your words of support, granted to us during a Papal Audience in September of 2013, gave us a newfound strength in the upholding of the dignity of all human life from conception to natural end. You said to us that, “Your being Catholic entails a greater responsibility: first of all to yourself, to be committed to being consistent with the Christian vocation; and then to contemporary culture, to contribute to recognising the transcendent dimension in human life, the imprint of the creative work of God, from the very first moment of conception.”
MaterCare International (MCI) was established during the papacy of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to provide an organized voice for Catholic obstetricians and gynaecologists. This organization of obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives and general practitioners is dedicated to reducing the tragically high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity throughout the world, through new initiatives of service, training, research, and advocacy. MCI is legally established in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.
This past year, we have had the honor of being awarded a generous grant from the Papal Foundation. This grant has given us the opportunity to continue the completion of a 20 bed maternity hospital in rural Kenya. The hospital provides training to local birth attendants, breast feeding clinics, pre and post natal care, emergency obstetrical care, and basic obstetrical services to women in one of the poorest regions in the world. We are eternally grateful to you and the foundation for this opportunity and your continued support. We receive no funds from government aid agencies, and so we rely solely on the charity and support of individual donors and organizations.
In addition to our field projects, we are in the process of organizing our second summit on Natural Family Planning (NFP) to be held at Strathmore University in Nairobi. We are dedicated to providing information and training on NFP methods that are free, safe, effective, maintain the dignity of the female body and build intimacy and respect within couples.
In celebration of the first anniversary of your election as Successor of the Apostle Peter, we thank you and are united with you in prayer.
With great joy and thanksgiving,
Dr. Robert Walley, Executive Director, MaterCare International (MCI)
