Dear Dr. Walley and Simon,
dear all of you.
I am happy that I can inform you that through the help of MaterCare, especially the ambulance, we could save one more life.
Let me explain shortly:
On sunday at 11am I received a call from the government dispensary in Kipsing, they got a young pregnant mama in coma. She is 16 years old, pregnant 32 weeks, in coma since saturday afternoon. The relatives had shaved her, digged the grave and prepared for the funeral on sunday. But then somebody realized on sunday morning that she was still alive. They brought her to the facility. Dan and Rose (our nurse) left 15 min after I received the phone call. The woman was convulsing when they arrived, through propper medication which Rose injected immediately the convulsions stopped. They reached the Isiolo district hospital at 3pm. On monday the hospital team delivered the dead baby, the mama still in coma. But NOW THIS NIGHT at 1am she woke up! I am coming right now from the hospital where I checked on her. After lunch I will go back with 2 mamas from her community and our pharmacist to translate what she is talking. none of the staff is speaking samburu at the maternity. (we are having a training for Community health workers right now here at the pastoral center. and most of the participants are coming from the Kipsing area. so we are using this current example to teach them the importance to go for clinics.....) But her condition is stabilized now, the doctors are convinced that pre-eclampsia was the main reason.
with many greetings from Isiolo,
Katrin
