Natural Family Planning Stories

In November, the Family Life National office of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) in collaboration with the MaterCare International carried out a training of teachers of natural family planning at the Dimesse sisters in Karen, Nairobi. The training funded by Italian Conference of Catholic Bishops and done in association with the World Organization of Ovulation Method Billings (WOOMB) was attended by over 60 participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uganda, DRC and Sudan.

According to Dr Robert Walley, Professor emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also the Executive Director and founder of MaterCare International, the training on natural family planning is about couples being taught how to control their own fertility whether they want to become pregnant or whether they wish to avoid for the time being having a pregnancy.

“We wanted to have a conference that focuses on how to train rural women, that’s why we got this team together to become trainers so they can go back to the diocese and teach the rural women this method… the importance is that you do not have to buy anything; it’s effective and the people can use it for as long as they want,” said Dr Walley.

According to Mrs Teresa Abuya, the National Family Life Coordinator, the method is simple. “The woman’s body has to be understood, once the patterns of changes and the cycles have been understood, the method works,” she says. (Read the full article here)
