MaterCare International Proposal Accepted For UN Conference.
The Non-Government Organization (NGO) section of the United Nations is holding a two-day conference, Millennium Development Goals: Civil Society Takes Action, September 8-10, 2004, in New York. Acceptance for the conference was competitive and MaterCare International’s proposal for a mid-day interactive workshop was successful. At the conference MaterCare will lead a workshop on maternal health in Africa in partnership with Fraternite Notre Dame. MaterCare will focus on the effects of birth injury and actions taken to restore women to health. Fraternity Notre Dame will focus on its work to improve child health and poverty. The workshop addresses the UN millennium goals related to poverty, maternal health and child health and mortality.
CIDA refusal
Unfortunately, the Canadian International Development Fund (CIDA) has turned down the MaterCare proposal to provide funds for three years operation of the Birth Trauma Centre in Ghana. They provide committee comments, some of which appear to indicate a lack of knowledge of the previous work by MaterCare and funded by CIDA, particularly the preventitive work. The Chairman of MaterCare International, Dr. Eamon O'Dwyer, has sent a letter to seek clarification since the Minister had previously encouraged the re-submission of this proposal. Anyone wishing to see the actual CIDA response or Dr. O’Dwyer’s letter, please contact us.
